5S
- 5S began as part of the Toyota Production System [TPS] in Japan.
- 5S is a Japanese concept for organising the workspace so that work can be performed efficiently, effectively, and safely. This system focuses on putting everything where it belongs and keeping the workspace clean, which makes it easier for people to do their jobs without wasting time or risking injury.
- 5S is made up of 5 Japanese words that start with the letter 's'.
1s- Seiri- Sort
2s- Seiton- Straighten/ Systematic Arrangement
3s- Seiso- Shine/ Cleankiness
4s- Seiketsu- Standardised
5s- Shitsuke- Sustain Self-Discipline
1s
- Segregate the wanted and unwanted items.
- Discard what is not needed.
- Segregate the needed items by frequency of use.
- To take out unnecessary items, I'm either sorting, red-tagging or disposing of them.
Necessary:-
- Used for daily work.
- Used periodically.
- I am the source.
Unnecessary:-
- Unsafe.
- Defective.
- Obsolete & outdated.
- Unused.
- Extra or Duplicate.
2s
- There is a place for everything and everything in its place.
- Anyone should be able to easily understand proper arrangement and abnormalities.

3s
- Clean your working area and maintain it.
- "Regular/Daily cleaning & Inspection of the working area, machines, equipment, etc.
Example:-
- Daily machine CLIT sheets.
- Office cleaning check-list.
- Lone/Area cleaning check-list.
- Fans & Light cleaning schedule.
- Floor cleaning schedule.
- Toilet cleaning checklist.
4s
- Create & maintain standards for everything within the work area.
- "4s means standardising the method throughout the work area".
